Nobody listens to me!

Consumers frequently report "lack of content" as an obstacle to widespread 3D adoption, but most industry conferences focus on technical aspects or integration of 3D into consumer electronics devices. Leaders from the content side to told of their plans for the future of 3D content to the home. I think this is wrong. The real problem with 3D is it is not a viable home product. I just don't think people want to watch re-runs of "Two and a Half Men" in 3D?

People seemed mesmerized, but it did not hold their interest long. They lined up and then disappeared. Sony introduced "glasses Free" 3D. Kevin Sintumuang of the Wall Street Journal said in a tweet, "A few glasses-free 3-D prototypes this year. If you want to know what they look like, cross your eyes, spin around and take a shot of vodka."

I agree!. Just a few minuted of the demo and I was on my way. I was not alone. I did notice that no one hung around or made a fuss over the display. It was just there.

Sessions focus on 3D, over-the-top services (delivery of content directly to CE devices) and trends in mobile entertainment. Panelists are top executives from manufacturers and Hollywood studios, including Disney, Dreamworks, EA, ESPN and Warner Bros. They tried to build excitement... I did not see it in the crowd.

The picture was taken at the Samsung booth. The display is really impressive, but I love my picture. It reminds me of the famous Apple commercial for 1984, don't you think?

The Nevada Film Festival offers film-goers a rare opportunity to meet the filmmakers. Directors, screenwriters, cinematographers and actors eager to share their work will provide an exclusive inside look at the industry during post-screening Q&A's.

This year's festival line-up included award winning and world premiere feature films, documentaries, short films, foreign films, animations, music videos, experimental films, a screenplay competition, and an actor's showcase.

I saw “With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story” on Saturday afternoon. At 88 years old, Stan Lee's name appears on over 1 billion comics in 75 countries in 25 languages. Stan has co-created over 500 legendary pop culture characters including Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk!

The surprise was “Skew”. I did not know anything about this film before it started. It began as a low quality hand held home video… but quickly escalated into much more. The lead actors head out on an eagerly anticipated road trip and they bring along a video camera to record their journey. What starts out as a carefree adventure slowly becomes a creepy and surprisingly shocking journey. For a ultra low budget film, it pack some surprising shocks.

The last film, and where I had a chance to meet and dine with the filmmaker, was "Menschenliebe", directed by Alexander Tuschinski, a young filmmaker from Germany. It was about a nerd that gets help with seducing women… inspired by 'Don Giovanni' in Mozart's opera! Although clearly a student film, it was fully realized and surprisingly fun.

I had lunch at the Irish pub at the Rampart Casino with Alexander Tuschinski, Phil Rached (screen play award) and Kerry Kazmierowicztrimm (really, that’s on his business card) (also a screen play award winner). It was interesting to discuss how to establish yourself in the industry with these recent graduates from across the country. The happy hour beer prices were kind a cool, too.

Married . . . With Comics @ Comic Book Festival

The Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival is part of the annual Vegas Valley Book Festival, which runs the first week of November in various locations across Las Vegas. This year’s event was the biggest (and longest!), special guests, more panels, free films, a bevy of the city’s most popular food trucks, tons of great merchandise from local comic shops, and all sorts of other geek-tastic awesomeness!

I went on Saturday afternoon and attended the presentation, "Married with Comics." Paul Tobin writes extensively for Marvel Comics (Spider-Girl, Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man, Spider-Man & the Secret Wars, Black Widow & the Marvel Girls, Super Heroes, Models Inc., and many more) and has worked for DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and several other companies. He presented with his wife, illustrator Colleen Coover. Their previous work together was Banana Sunday, which placed on YALSA’s list of best graphic novels for teens. I asked him if in the digital revolution had an effect on his career. He said as a wordsmith (writer), not really. He submitted his content to the artists and they interpreted it. He developed a 13 panel plot point and one time got back the entire sequence in six panels. He works with artists around the world. He, in some cases, has not even met some of them!

I asked him what it was like the first time he got a check from Marvel. He said it was really cool... but just that. I was surprised how calm he said he took it. I would have been jumping up and down and calling everyone! He said the check it self had a Spider-Man on it with a "thwip like sound image". He said he and his Marvel buddies called the checks (they are all contract, work for hire, freelance) "Thwips.

Great Food Trucks in Vegas

Food trucks are a culinary trend. They are suddenly everywhere. Trucks move constantly, "broadcasting" their location by Twitter, parking wherever they can find enough space, and drawing as many as 800 people.

In the world of food, the food truck has a kind of celebrity standing. It is where the action is. As the LA Times said:

“The truck and its staff of merry makers have become a sort of roving party, bringing people to neighborhoods they might not normally go to, and allowing for interactions with strangers they might not otherwise talk to.”

In marketing class summer quarter, we developed Marketing plans for food trucks. I think there were some pretty good ideas presented with some great creative material.

Our own Michael Baker of the Art Institute of Las Vegas spoke this week at SIGGRAPH. Now in its 38th year, the SIGGRAPH conference is the premier international event on computer graphics and interactive techniques. The SIGGRAPH conference attracts the most respected technical and creative people from all over planet Earth.

Michael was on the panel titles Destruction and Dynamics for Film and Game Production. He spoke on Authoring Destruction with the Dynamica Bullet Maya Plugin. The course was focused on “rigid-body and particle simulation and collision techniques used in breaking objects and large-scale destruction. He gave a brief introduction to the basic theory, and then the course continued with examples from specific films and games. Other topics included production aspects such as authoring tools (including the open-source Bullet physics library used in both game and film production) and computational and algorithmic issues.”

Though organized by Advanced Micro Devices, other members of the presentation committee included people from DreamWorks Animation, Industrial Light & Magic and Disney Interactive Studios.

I think this commercial is wonderful for a lot of reasons. Certainly a lot of content is revealed in only 30 seconds and the little actress is terrific, but the message is really clear also. I went to the free workshop in Digital Rebels sponsored by Adobe and it was great! There’s a new breed of filmmakers who are changing the rules for film production and distribution. Defying the big, bloated movie budgets of the past, today’s digital rebels are making their films fast and with surprisingly low budgets. But make no mistake; the caliber and quality of these films is right up there with the best of the best. The student an BUS251 Project Management Winter 2011 did a combination culinary, hospitality design project with elaborate graphic design elements! And the food by Peter Kim was TERRIFIC! He has excellent credentials - he was a chef at both the Bellagio and the Mirage for five years. Joe Browning did the graphic design and Magdalena Corbet did the clothing and business plan.

As usual, the time constraint were VERY tight, but the results were very impressive.

To be a Playboy photographer is a dream most men have had at one time or another in their lives, mostly starting at adolescence and never really leaving. To be like Arny, the most prolific and successful shooter of all the Playboy Playmate Centerfolds — 146 girls and counting — is beyond imagination for even the most bold Walter Mitty types in the audience seated before him.

The Project Management class this quarter did one of my favorite projects!

We built Super Bowl style commercials and posted them to youtube to try and take advantage of all the hype surrounding the big game. I think they did a great job. Keep in mind that the time constraints were really tight - only two weeks to create, shoot and edit a one minute commercial - and them post it and get hits. In the past we got as much as 800,000 hits, but I think my original idea of banned Superbowl commercials has been over-saturated and maybe even stolen by actual advertisers (hey GoDaddy).

Give up folks. No one cares about 3D TV. Trust me, it's the Buttoneer (http://www.as-seen-on-tv-reviews.net/detail.asp?prodid=2327) of 2011

Originally from the 1970's, the Buttoneer is a marketing disaster legend.

Claims to be "invisible!" but the thick "clear" plastic is so fat that it shows white and is extremely obviously and tacky on any dark colored items when hemming.

As for buttons, the button stays on... so long as it isn't used. Once I tried using the actual button as, well, a button, the "secure" hold of the plastic broke through. I now have little piece of white plastic sticking out of my pants where I tried to get it to work and where it snapped.

You can still buy it, but it is a novelty, not a real product.

Just like 3D TV for the home.. as long as you have to use glasses!

I used to work in corporate marketing. One of the challenges we had came every year when we had the national sales meeting. We'd pull guys off the grid, pull them into corporate headquarters and waste their time. I asked why? The Vice President of Sales said the goal was to increase sales. I suggested we call the sales conference "Sell More Stuff" because that is what we wanted to do, wasn't it?

This car is bursting with testosterone, grease, and beer. I'm not saying women won't like it because all women want guys in muscle cars, I'm just saying it won't like women. It wasn't made for women. This man-made beast of a machine was built for one purpose, burning rubber. Check out the racing tires, look at the hood(and picture what's underneath), and just imagine yourself churning down the road as other cars remain flecks in your rear view. Picture yourself rolling down the road in this horsepower strapped piece of retro-badassery and then ask yourself, do I really want that Toyota anymore? Is it really that important that I get that hybrid for the environment, I'm just one man what can I possibly do to help save the o-zone? The answer is nothing, decide to place the o-zone into the hands of much lesser men than yourself and sit down on the cigarette burnt leather seats, grab your 8-track collection(you know you still have one), and prepare to propel your life into the well-used future.

In the Fundamentals of Advertising class, we welcomed Jerry Metellus to give a presentation and show his work.

He is a former entertainer (model, dancer, actor) who traded the limelight to setting up lights and shines it on others. He prefers to work with people but will also shoot food and architecture. “I can handle, but they're not the best humorous communicators...”

The Web's New Gold Mine: Your Secrets
A Journal investigation finds that one of the fastest-growing businesses on the Internet is the business of spying on consumers

The Journal examined the 50 most popular U.S. websites, which account for about 40% of the Web pages viewed by Americans. (The Journal also tested its own site, WSJ.com.) It then analyzed the tracking files and programs these sites downloaded onto a test computer.
As a group, the top 50 sites placed 3,180 tracking files in total on the Journal's test computer. Nearly a third of these were innocuous, deployed to remember the password to a favorite site or tally most-popular articles.
But over two-thirds—2,224—were installed by 131 companies, many of which are in the business of tracking Web users to create rich databases of consumer profiles that can be sold.
The top venue for such technology, the Journal found, was IAC/InterActive Corp.'s Dictionary.com. A visit to the online dictionary site resulted in 234 files or programs being downloaded onto the Journal's test computer, 223 of which were from companies that track Web users.
The information that companies gather is anonymous, in the sense that Internet users are identified by a number assigned to their computer, not by a specific person's name. The company, for instance, says it doesn't know the name of users such as Ms. Jones—only their behavior and attributes, identified by code number.

And the industry says the data are used harmlessly.

Websites and blogs that post Las Vegas Review-Journal content, however innocent their intent, can expect to be sued without warning

In the Las Vegas Sun Newspaper on August 5, 2010, an article by Steve Green details the Las Vegas Review Journal’s attempt to control their original content. A brief synopsis follows. Click on the headline to go to the original article.

“Righthaven’s procedure has been to “troll” to find an infringement of an R-J
copyright to a specific story. It then buys the copyright for that story from
the R-J’s owner, Stephens Media LLC, and afterward sues the infringer…

In online forums and news stories, Righthaven has been widely pounded on
for suing mom-and-pop-type bloggers, nonprofit groups and special-interest
websites that can’t afford to fight back in court — and for hitting copyright
infringers with suits rather than asking that they take down the stories and
replace them with links to the originals…

None of the contested Righthaven cases has advanced to the point where a trial has been scheduled. Judges as of Friday had not yet ruled on the motions for dismissal or the other legal arguments by defendants…”

Vegas Celebrity Chef Project

The students in my Project Marketing class did an impressive job on developing a new brand for a local Vegas chef, Chef David Suppe, to position him as a Vegas Celebrity Chef!

I got this from Steve Scott. He is in my Career Development Class this quarter:

I was at lunch with my wife the other day with my wife, when I received a phone call from an employer looking for a graphic designer. I was surprised by the call because I really wasn’t looking for a job at the time. It just so happens that career services sent over my resume. This employer had a few resumes to look at so I knew I had to get in there as soon as possible to be his first interview. I had to battle my first instanced to just run over there right away and meet this person. This is how I used to do it, and it never seemed to work out. I asked, “how about tomorrow morning?” and then I asked what time would he be getting to the office, and he told me around 8:30 am. I knew that it would be best to give him time to get situated so I made an appointment for 9:30 am. This seemed to please him. He stated that he has quite a few people to look at, and I stated that after he meets me he will look no farther.

I think that this whole interview would have never been this good without the guidance of my teacher Frank Pinto. He is my Career Development teacher at the Art Institute Las Vegas. I thought to myself about how truly I would be prepared for this interview thanks to his class.

That night I went home to check out this businesses web site. Man was I surprised to see that it was right up my ally. I knew this job was for me. I knew that this was the place I wanted to work. So I started to take big steps to ensure this job was going to be mine.

My and me wife started to shop. I knew I needed to dress to impress, so we went out to look for some nice cloths for me to wear. We spent 3 hrs shopping around before we came to Wal-Mart, the last place I wanted to go to find cloths. But to my surprise I found everything I needed. I looked pretty good, maybe a little over dressed. But I looked really professional.

The day of the interview I showed up 15 minutes early dressed to impress. I had to wait in the waiting room for 20 minutes so I busted out my GD USA magazine and read. When I went into the interview I was ready. I knew what I needed to say, and I had an idea of what they wanted to hear.

When they asked me what amount I was looking for I threw them a story of how I have been going to school for 4 years preparing me for this job They told me that they were looking for somebody to work with another designer and the postion paid a modest amount an hour. I also told them I would settle for significantly more as long as they agreed to look at a raise in the future. But since I seem to have so much more experience I would be hired as the other employee’s boss. He offered me $5 more and asked if that would be good to start for now? Then he said we could talk about more in a couple of months. So already I have made $9,000 dollars extra because I knew how to walk into that interview prepared. Not to mention when he sat me down behind the computer he was even more impressed. I rocked that interview. I start work next Tuesday. I gave my old employer two weeks notice and I am off to start my new career as a Graphic Designer. Thanks Frank Pinto and your Career Development class.

The Culinary Department and Project Management

This is the project that the students did in the Winter in Project Managment Class. I think they did a great job. They worked with the Cullinary Department to build a combination Cookbook and cooking DVD. The project was very elaborate and looked great, too. It included a website, videos and mock ups of the finished projects. The web content was created by Tamaki. Here is a snapshot of her talent:

Super Bowl Commercials

I challenged my Project Management class to create a super bowl style commercial and post it to youtube.com and get 5.000 hits. They did this under tight constraints. They formed groups of four people of mixed degrees including film-making, animation and game design. They had just two weeks to create, film and edit the one minute (plus five seconds of credits) and then post it to youtube at one minute after midnight Friday before super bowl. Then they had seven days (incuding Super Bowl Sunday) to get the hits. They did a project on guerrilla marketing to develop ideas to spread the word.

One project was weak and had hits that proved it. Another was a good effort, and they learned a lot, but the hits were a miss. One group did a fine job on the commercial and had over 6,000 hits in less then seven days. It had grown since: 7,625 views as of today. I think if they put the effort in, they might be able to cross 10,000. Alas, the project is over. We have moved on to a way more challenging set of projects for the second half of the quarter. It is a very difficult time for our profession and especially for young designers who are graduating into this industry. This is from Career Services found in LinkedIn.com. Members were asked to share their insights and even "secrets" as to how to succeed in this industry.

Todd Bricker

Networking. It is a huge advantage to know someone, to have worked with them in the past and to have done a good job while working with them.

Lynne Kelly

If a strong-willed client comes to you with a lot of terrible ideas for the design project you are working on for them, don't waste your time and energy trying to talk them out of it. It takes much less time and effort to make a quick comp giving them exactly what they think they want, and then present it side-by-side with the piece that they actually need. 98% of the time they will immediately see the error of their ways and start treating you like the expert they hired you to be.

Kara Hooper

We are creative and have flexible brains. I think one of the most important things a young designer can do is learn the vocabulary of the people you work with. If you call it a pen and they call it a stylo, start calling it a stylo when you talk with them. If they call it a marketing strategy and you call it a direct mail piece, call it a marketing strategy. Once you speak their vocabulary and have a mutual space in which to talk together, you can begin to educate them and help expand their definitions. It's about them all the time. Meet them where they are.

The thinking is correct. Give them what they want, give them what they need and give them a combination of the two (almost like you're picking the battle to fight). Most of the time they pick the combo. So, I've reduced the number of concepts down to only 2. What they want and what I want them to select. I still give it my all on both concepts though.

One important piece of advice that will take you a long way: learn how to write. Learn how to articulate your point impressively and like an adult. So many people in my age group (most of whom are coming out of school right now) can't even put a proper sentence together or spell correctly. When you have to describe yourself on paper, write a cover letter, write copy, or write a proposal, your writing ability WILL say something to its reader about your level of professionalism and education.

I'm also a recent graduate and by no means really experienced. But! I would like to strongly suggest that anyone still in school, take an internship if you get the opportunity. Even if it's unpaid! If you like the agency's work, then go and learn and get experience. While I was in school, I was also working full time (not in the industry) and I refused to take on an unpaid internship because I already had a full time paying job. But now my biggest problem in finding a job in the industry is my lack of experience. I have two bachelors (one in business and one in design), as well as lot of experience in customer service, but without agency experience, I'm hitting a wall.

Good design is about translating communication or marketing objectives effectively and without having an understanding of how companies do business most designer will unfortunately fail. My advice to any designer would be to take marketing and communication courses in addition to design and world applications.

Young designers should embrace the practice of creating design briefs that uses universal language that the business community will understand... do not talk in design speak while addressing clients with design solutions. Sharpen your listening, intuitive, and verbal and non-verbal skills to better understand the client and their initial reaction(s) to your design ideas. Cultivate a life long curiosity of learning from clients, design, etc.

Relationships are the most important thing in your career. Call it networking, call it friendship, but people will make the difference in your career: Mentors, co-workers and clients. Find those kindred spirits and build those relationships.

Susan Reed

One thing that hasn't really been mentioned here is that recent graduates should not be too proud to have to pay their dues. It doesn't have to be for the rest of your career. Your first 'design' position might be working on the client side, doing production art for packaging labels or daily updates to the company's web site via a template.

Marketing and the Holiday Spirits

In Marketing class in the summer, the students had to develop a new vodka brand. Well vodka is just distilled grain, but creating a new brand is for a marketer. Minnie came up with a great idea and some fine visuals, don't you think?

St. Nick's Spirits wants to be right there with you and yours during the holidays as you shake presents when no one's looking, attend "white elephant" parties and wrap those special presents at the last minute in newspaper funnies. St. Nick's will be there lubricating your senses as you watch in horror as your parents barrage your fiance with anecdotes of Christmases past complete with pictures of you in your Underoos unwrapping presents. St. Nick's Spirits will become the beverage of the holiday season.

Fans talked it up on Twitter and Facebook, while the movie expanded to more cities based on which markets received the most requests to see it on a Web site Paramount set up… "We all spend a lot of time talking about Facebook and Twitter and our ability to communicate. The owners wanted to be closer to the Airport. They needed a doorman to take deliveries, and they wanted to be closer to their office. They wanted to have a glass box up in the sky, something very manageable and easy, like a glorified hotel room. The result doesn't feel cluttered. Furniture had to be precisely measured. The miniature side-tables were custom ordered to fit in the crevices on either side of the bed. They also purposefully chose some oversized pieces—the armoire, the horse sculpture and a large floor lamp—to add drama to the space. When you have all small-scale furniture, it starts to look like a dorm room, said the owner.

"I was surprised how small it was," says furniture designer Marsia Holzer, whom the owners tapped to custom-make lighting and other pieces, including the horse sculpture and side-tables. "I think it's interesting that they didn't have to get an enormous place to show how great they are."

If you spend any time online, have a TV or know anyone who does, you've probably heard about the latest craze blasting its way through cyberspace. In case you haven't, a recap: A guy in a neoprene suit goes barreling down a waterslide, flies off the end and through the air, traveling a great distance, and splashes down in a tiny pool. It's the MegaWoosh. See?

Please understand. This is a hoax. It didn't happen. Ultimately, it's an ad for Microsoft Germany. Still, it is awfully clever. Heck, some commentators out there on the Net are suggesting it could be one of the greatest fakes in the history of the World Wide Web.

How this excellent production came together can be boiled down to something like this -- a stuntman starts down the slide, but a rope keeps him from going too far, the thing that's airborne isn't a person, but is instead animation, and the principal character ended up in the pool by dropping off a small ramp. Piece it seamlessly together, and there you go.

Networking and Robot Chicken

Seth Green, Matthew Senreich and Breckin Meyer will set off on a historic voyage across the country with the Robot Chicken on Wheels '09 Tour as part of the Adult Swim Presents series. LaidOffCamp at the Art Institute of Las Vegas

The concept is easy. Show up. Express interests and concerns. Break off into smaller discussion groups and exchange information. The Las Vegas Version was held Friday, July 10th.

Since the first camp in San Francisco in March, the volunteer-driven events have been held in several cities, including Dallas and New York. The camps are free. Information about upcoming camps is posted at LaidOffCamp.com and details are available on Facebook.

It’s a way to help people by providing information relevant to their situation. After seven years working as a multimedia designer for slot manufacturer IGT, Las Vegas resident Michael Baker (in picture with Debra Baez of Baez Design, a guest speaker) left to start his own multimedia company. When the economy tanked, he needed to figure out a few things, so he headed to LaidOffCamp in Los Angeles.

The one-day camp, held in May, drew attendees who were self-employed, unemployed or looking to leave the corporate world. They exchanged information on a wide range of topics, including health insurance, legal issues facing startups, personal branding, monetizing skills and expertise.

CineVegas is different than some film festivals – it has less movies! Ah, but the parties….

There were less than thirty movies this year. With working my real job (this!) and volunteering, I was under the gun to see the hits. I was pretty lucky. I saw three of the top festival films (Etienne!, Easier With Practice and Winnebago Man) and the almost impossible to get tickets to see closing night film, World’s Greatest Dad.

Winnebago Man was an odd film. I was unfamiliar with the youtube.com sensation. Seems that everyone (except me) was familiar with this crazy guy who spits and swears while making a twenty year old industrial film about how wonderful Winnebago’s are to own. A man named Jack Rebney is Winnebago Man. These are the outtakes and tirades pieced together by the video crew that Mr. Rebney had hired to assist in making a promotional video for marketing RVs. There are several versions of the original on YouTube. This one runs over 4 minutes and features Winnebago Man's hatred for flies and several long swearing and cursing montages. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSWUWPx2VeQ . It has millions of hits.

I did not quite get it. I think this because I was unsure through the first third of the film if it was a documentary or a mockumentary. It took a while for me to realize the scope of the impact of this “found” footage. To me, the film lacked structure. On the other hand, the audience certainly responded. It got the audience favorite. There was a Vegas connection in the film, also. Although the featured subject of the film was not at the festival, his best friend came. Turns out he lives in Vegas. I met him, but it took a few minutes for me to realize who he was. We chatted for a while. He is quite an interesting character in his own right.

I was not particularly impressed with Robin William’s World’s Greatest Dad. I spoke with the director, Bob Goldthwait in the theater after the Q&A. He felt the Vegas crowd was too mature for the film. Having been a comedian, only he could put Vegas and mature in the same sentence and still keep a straight face. He said he had just shown the film to a young audience in Maryland in a theater with 700 seats. They went wild and gave him a standing ovation. He was surprised at the cool reception the film got that night.

The highlight of the festival was the real closing night film. On Monday, after the festival supposedly ended, CineVegas set up an outdoor “drive-in” to show the 1958 sensation, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. It was a rare opportunity to see this B-film sci-fi classic the way the creators meant it to be seen. With popcorn, soda (unless you smuggled in a couple beers – and many did) and the balmy Vegas night, it was an only at a film festival treat! The after party at the Sidebar nearby capped a wonderful evening. Sponsored by Grey Goose Vodka and Stella Artois (read lots of free alcohol), the vibe was going strong in this festival wrap up.

I met Jim Turner at the party. He is the founder and director of the independent Film Society of Colorado. As a self-professed addict of independent cinema, he has worked at Sundance for a number of years. He leveraged that love of film into yearly festival in his hometown. He dismissed his day job (as a government contractor) as an excuse to fund his real love – festival films. He uses his limited vacation to work both Sundance and CineVegas. Working at these festivals has afforded Jim the opportunity to make contacts with filmmakers and film professionals from around the world. There was also a party Saturday night at the Playboy Club, but for some reason, even after spending hours at it, I don’t really remember much. There are some pictures posted elsewhere on this blog. Apparently, I took them.

CineVegas is over and I had a great time.

It was a bit shortened this year, and this made it more difficult to both volunteer and participate in the festival. I did work the box-office for the third time in my ten years of working the festival. It seemed the lines were longer at the box-office, but the loading of the theaters went smoother.

I made a point to see the picture that Trevor Groth was hot on at his presentation at the Coffee Bean a few weeks ago. I have to say that it was the best hamster mover I had ever seen. The basic plot was after a young finds out that his best and only friend, a dwarf hamster named Etienne, has terminal cancer, he decides to take his pocket pet on a bicycle road trip to show him the world before he has to put him to sleep. It was a terrific student film, but hardly a major motion picture as the credits suggest.

I spoke to the director, Jeff Mizushima, in the CineVegas headquarters. He ended up winning the Filmmaker to Watch Award for his film. I complemented him on getting the film made – this is a tough thing for young filmmakers – and asked him about his plans. Chris Gore joined us. He is a writer, filmmaker, speaker, television host and commentator who has built a solid reputation as an outspoken voice in the independent film world. We discussed why young filmmakers are at a loss as to using their project to make money. It is a challenge to just get the film made. Actually using it to make money is a very difficult concept. Since he did not have distribution for his film, I suggested building a marketing program. He might start with a youtube.com video. He should build videos as DVD extras. He had an original song in the film performed by a local band. They were performers at a party at the festival. I suggested that he reedit the footage into a music video and use it to get a lot of hits. He could also reedit the scene of bike crash into the car with the unused footage about the bike into a tree that he discussed in Q&A after the film. This would be a kind of outtakes reel. He nodded. I later checked that indeed he had posted a video to youtube.com almost a year ago. It was dull. At the time it had about 1000 hits. The student videos (of varying quality) on THIS blog have gotten over two million hits. Getting noticed is possible. Making money is OK. You can use it to do more of the things you like to do… like make movies.

Oakley Sunglasses at Night Art Tour joined AILV on May 21 at night in front of the school. In addition to a full Oakley gallery exhibit, beats being played by Oakley's resident DJ, and free food and drink, the event featured 40 pairs of Oakley sunglasses designed by students wanting to make their mark on the Oakley brand.

A week prior to the event, participating students at the Institute were given white Oakley Hijinx and very few guidelines. Leaving no material left behind, the students showcased their artistic talents on an Oakley eyewear canvas.

Residing Judge Andrew Petterson, who last year designed 50 handcrafted Oakley Frogskins, held court over the festivities. He is a freelance artist with an Oakley connection. Though a bright and Red Bull (and something else) fueled conversation, he revealed that he had been raised in Boise, Idaho and moved to the West Coast at age 19. He makes his living in the automotive industry as a custom paint designer. He freely admits that he has no creative control over his day job, so he uses his Oakley connection to express himself. Living in Huntington Beach, he is connected into that snowboard, skateboard young guy lifestyle that inspires the Oakley brand. Although unschooled, he was inspired by both his parents who were artists and educators. Though laidback, at 28 years old, he admits to an intense commitment to his creative energies. “I live this,” he says, “but I love what I do.” Induced to share his body art, he says he worked in collaboration with the tattoo artist to blend his original designs with the artistic ability of the other artist. They hooked up though a chance meeting with a mutual friend who had a tattoo that Andrew admired. The tattoo artist needed a paint job to restore his car and Andres wanted a chest to knee tattoo and a deal was stuck. Visiting his third Art Institute, he admitted that for the first time that he was a little intimidated by the talent of the students at our school. The quality of the students work, both in the sunglass project and student work on display, impressed him.

Rett, the marketing manger from Oakley was equally excited about the school. He revealed that he like to continue our relationship. He suggested that he might be a good addition to our marketing classes. The target market for Oakley products is exactly the market that is hardest for current marketers to reach.

Outstanding Job for a Couple Talented Web Designers

See the previous post! It seems that some of our student work is being confused with the actual websites they are redesigning. As an instructor, I have used this project a number of times. This confusion can be the result of a number of issues, but I think it clear that the students involved - Lynn and Nick - can be commended on well done work. Compare their proposed redo's of Las Vegas Movie Insider witht he actual website. Both Lynn and Nick came up as number 8 and 11 respectfully on a google search with the real LVMI coming up first.

Some good news and some bad news... Lynn's webwork was so compelling that it showed up on a google search as the EIGHTH listing... and it is not a real site! This certainly shows how wonderful Lynn's work is and how well she designs her web pages. CineVegas Cafe Series

I went to the CineVegas Café Series over the weekend. The featured speaker was Trevor Groth. I’ve known him for about seven years, although I am not sure he knew my name for the first few. As a long-term volunteer for the festival, I have seen many changes. I think Trevor was one of the best. He has been involved with the Sundance Film Festival for many years: first as a volunteer, then as staff, then programming and he was recently promoted to Head of Programming for Sundance. I told him that he was the first person that I had seen interview on the Sundance Channel that I actually know.

As Artistic Director for CineVegas, he discussed the upcoming festival and opened the conversation to questions. I asked him what he thought of the article in the WSJ about the tightening of funding for independent films.

According to the article “Indie Films Suffer Drop-Off in Rights Sales” from the WSJ April 20, 2009, “In the latest challenge to the American movie business, a crucial source of funding for independent films -- sales of foreign-distribution rights -- is rapidly drying up… But today, due to factors ranging from the credit crunch to burgeoning online piracy, even the biggest names aren't always enough to sell an American film abroad.”

Trevor said, “ With the challenges of the domestic economy combined with the paradigm changes brought on by digital media and downloading, the industry is trying to figure out how to monetize films and filmmaking. While this is going on, the festival circuit may offer an opportunity to get your product out and be seen by the marketplace.”

Once upon a time, records (now cd’s) were the focus of the recording industry. Artist toured to promote their record sales. Now it is just the opposite. Recording and downloads help promote the touring and concert industries.

Again, from the WSJ article, says Mr. [Graham] King [a Hollywood film producer who won an Oscar in 2007 for "The Departed]. “With credit drying up across the globe, many foreign distributors simply don't have the capital to buy… At some point these buyers have to find some product for 2010 and 2011, so Cannes and Venice will be interesting,"

Certainly, the conversation on Saturday supported this contention. Trevor said that the submissions for both Sundance and CineVegas have never been higher.

Making Freelancing Work For You

In the Wall Street Journal, there is a report on how Web sites that advertise freelance work have been expanding, with some listing twice as many ads as they did a year ago. The sites — including Elance.com, Odesk.com and Guru.com — also feature opportunities in a wider variety of fields now, including accounting, law, engineering, sales and marketing. Many people also use Craigslist to advertise freelance gigs, too.

To be sure, freelancing is a juggling act in itself. The arrangement requires the ability to meet deadlines while always searching for and securing that next gig. There are also safety concerns if your job involves working with strangers. And working for yourself can have tricky tax consequences.

The good news is that many freelance job sites help simplify things by offering the option to create a free profile describing the services you offer. GarageBand on the Mac's

It is pretty easy to play with, but you have simply got to have some talent to make real music. Some of our students do! Stephanie Aucoin got a job offer the same day she was stopped in an elevator by an executive who noticed her new yellow wristband with "Laid Off Need a Job.com" embossed with black letters.

The executive, who was a chief financial officer at an alternative energy company, was looking for an assistant and told her to stop in to meet with him. "I did," says Ms. Aucoin, 48 years old, who started the new job in March after being laid off from an executive-assistant position at a local accounting firm last September.

The silicone bracelet -- think of Lance Armstrong's Livestrong original version -- was an idea Ms. Aucoin, of Sarasota, Fla., developed with Barbara Bourn, 59, a former colleague.

Hopeful entrepreneurs, most of whom have lost their jobs, are capitalizing on layoffs while also highlighting the plight of the jobless. They are dreaming up layoff-related merchandise, offering wristbands, mugs, T-shirts, board games and more to the recently unemployed -- whose ranks are growing. More than 5.1 million jobs have been lost since December 2007, and more cuts are expected in the coming months.
